I’ve listened to OGRE YOU ASSHOLE’s latest album “homely”. And, as you can tell from the video for “ロープ” (Rope), it is kinda weird. Every time OYA comes out with something there is a theme to it. Last year, the band released mini-album “浮かれている人” (Ukarete iru hito, Elated People) and it had light, airy songs like “バランス” (Balance) to complement the title. It was pretty different from what people have come to expect from OGRE YOU ASSHOLE. As if playing with our expectations, the band once again comes completely out of left field with a throwback to a soft-rock/jazzy/psychedelic concept album that is “homely”. Instead of sharp and edgy indie rock, you get largely atmospheric and progressive pieces that you would have you sit back and fall into the groove. I really have to give OYA kudos for having the balls to completely shift their sound to fit a theme, even though I’ll bet more than a few fans will be confused by the change and it might have even cost them a bassist.
