The law of Japanese indie music states that the crazier the Engrish name, the more awesome the music — and these guys are definitely no exception.
flumpool concocted their name by taking the ‘f’ from the word ‘four’ (the number of members), and adding the words ‘lump’ and ‘pool’. So in other words these guys are a ‘collective mass of four’, or a ‘quartet’ if you will -just Engrishified.

The origins of flumpool date back to 2002 where childhood friends Ryuuta Yamamura and Kazuki Sakai (vocals and guitar respectively) had that oh-so-familiar itch to become rockstars. But it wasn’t until 2007, when Genki Amakawa (bass) and Seiji Ogura (drums) joined that they started gaining notoriety around Osaka’s indie scene.
Then, finally in June 2008 they released their first single, “Mirai Kanai” (ミライカナイ), to much fanfare. Their video for “Labo” shot up to #1 and they were a featured artist for one of au KDDI’s ad campaigns.
Wasting no time, they began work on their next single, “Hana ni Nare” (花ã«ãªã‚Œ), which they’ve christened as their “major debut single” — and for good reason. After only two singles, you can see their music evolving rapidly. Ryuuta’s driving vocals are wonderfully accented by a thriving violin. Genki’s bass (alongside the violin) serves as the solid foundation and Kazuki’s riffs round out the song with brilliant bursts of color.
The future of this flowering foursome from Osaka is looking bright and vivid. They recently composed a song to be used as an insert in an upcoming major Japanese drama, and their first mini-album, UNREAL, will be hitting shelves in November.
flumpool is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
