Old Man and the Mountain

Yuichiro Miura once again left Japan heading towards Everest. The difference between him and all other adventurers heading towards Everest is just one thing. Miura is 75 years old.Adventurer Yuichiro Miura, 75

If he completes this quest, he will reclaim his title that was stolen from him last year. This of course being the oldest person to ever reach the summit. Miura claimed this in 2003 when he was 70. He only held onto it for 4 years before a 71 year old struggled his way to the top.

That’s not Miura’s only everest record. For some reason, in 1970 he decided it would be a good idea to ski down the mountain. He became the first person to ever do so. In fact, an Oscar winning documentary film followed him down that mountain, “The Man Who Skied Down Everest.”

Hopefully he makes it up there. I always wanted to summit the great mountains when I was younger, but for some reason the urge has tapered off. Seeing Miura go at the mountain again does get me excited. Not exactly any Everests around here, but high in the Rockies there are still some good mountains. I think I’ll hit up a couple of them this summer.

Goodluck Miura!

  1. How’s that for feel good? Best of luck to him and all the other mountaineers. At 75 he’s probably more fit than regular people a quarter his age :P The first to ski down Everest? WOW!!

  2. You know I read this earlier and didn’t comment but I just had to come back to it.

This guy is truly amazing, I’m 18 (supposedly this fittest I will be) and get tired climbing hills never mind Everest.

All I can say is good luck to him and I hope he returns safely

  3. Although with this many trips up the mountain before, it certainly means he knows what he is doing.

Not to downplay the risks or anything, because they are pretty big. He just most likely knows what they are and how to prepare for them.

  4. Hey, this is really amazing. Just by reading about this, I can imagine how exhausted it would be for me. And 75-year-old Miura is going up again! Wow~ do wish he can make a new record again.

  5. Good Luck Miurasan!
