Awful Japanese Disguises

I don’t know how you used to deal with bullies and hoodlums, but apparently in Japan now you can avoid them by dressing up like a soda machine. That’s right. Put on a costume that looks just like you are a Coke machine. A coke machine that also happens to be made of cloth, flaps in the wind, and steals your dollar 100% of the time.

But those creators also argue that Japanese ideas about crime prevention are the product of deeper cultural differences. While Americans want to protect themselves from criminals, or even strike back, the creators say many Japanese favor camouflage and deception, reflecting a culture that abhors self-assertion, even in self-defense.

“It is just easier for Japanese to hide,” Tsukioka said. “Making a scene would be too embarrassing.” She said her idea of the vending machine disguise was inspired by a trick used by Japan’s ancient ninja, who cloaked themselves at night under black blankets.

If this doesn’t seem like a good idea to you, not to worry! There are plenty others. Like for example the purse that also looks like a manhole cover. Just throw it in the street with all your valuables inside. Nobody will suspect that right?

  1. Enough with the social commentary. Perhaps her art was intended to humanize Coke. Pro-corporate artwork, now that’s controversial :P

  2. Although I don’t think it’s as effective as the Warhol soup cans.

  3. Have you seen the laptop cases disguised as pizza boxes? You have to carry them under your arm. Kind of loses it’s purpose at that point.

  4. haha pizza box laptop cases? That’s hilirious and a good second-hand use for pizza boxes :P

  5. It made me laugh because they’re supposed to prevent people stealling your laptop case. But how many people carry a pizza box under their arm, the pizza would get mangled.

  6. Ya, carrying a “pizza” under your arm would look ridiculous :P I’m not sure how successful that would as and anti-theft device considering some people might still steal it thinking it is a pizza (especially in a college town). hehe j/k
