ISU & JinYi’s Requiem

It may be a funny question but who can’t resist a good duet? Especially when it’s a ballad by two of Korea’s top pop-rock vocalists who’ve collaborated before. “레퀴엠” (Requiem) by ISU & JinYi is a beautiful duet and hopeful introduction to more goodness to come.

ISU (lead singer of M.C the Max) and JinYi (lead singer of Rumble Fish) came together to release the single. ISU and JinYi are no strangers to collaborations. JinYi appeared on M.C the Max’s Returns album in the humorous track about love and rejection called “Oh! Plz” and both were part of 2007’s All Star Christmas compilation CD. Their voices sound great together.

“Requiem” is a beautiful, balladic duet. It’s a slow and a perfect showcase for each vocalist’s ability. Both singers alternate verses and come together for a powerful chorus. The song gracefully progresses from calm to fervent high back to calm.

The accompanying music is something to be had as well. A somber piano leads into the first verse and strings perform throughout. The handsome musicality make the “Requiem” single’s b-side — an instrumental — worth listening to.

As a fan of both M.C the Max and Rumble Fish, I enjoy pretty much anything these two do. Both are pop rock bands that divide their efforts between upbeat jams and slower ballads. So, while ISU and JinYi are aren’t foreign to the good ol’ Korean ballad, their backgrounds in rock offer hope to their collaborative future.

So what could that future hold?

Since “Requiem” was released by ISU & JinYi (not ‘Isu featuring JinYi’ or visa versa), that’s hopefully a sign of more great work to come.
