Choke Sleeper’s self-titled success
By Shay • Nov 10th, 2007 • Category: Features, Japan, music, rockChoke Sleeper’s multifarious influences have led them to produce music that isn’t very easy to classify. Their recent album is no exception.
The Yokohama-based quintet was originally formed in 1997 and have since released 5 mini albums and 2 LPs. Chu (vocals), Shige (guitar & vocals), Toru (guitar), Azumi (bass), and Kenken (drums) have taken their unique sound, wild live performances, and party reputation to make a name for themselves.
The sound of Choke Sleeper (チョーク・スリーパー) is some combination of alternative rock, punk, pop, and rap. The degree of mixture of each often varies from song to song. Melodic vocal choruses, a variety of singing and rapping, powerful guitars, and steady rhythms are usually a staple.
Choke Sleeper’s “hard touring and a reputation as a party band” have built them a loyal following. They’ve also been a favorite opening act for many American punk bands touring in Japan. Among that list of bands is The Suicide Machines, Antiflag, Rise Against, NO USE FOR A NAME, Kottonmouth Kings.
The band’s recent, self-titled album has furthured their success. Released in the summer of 2007, Choke Sleeper is 11 tracks of energetic, party-inspired jamming. Things are pretty upbeat and while many tracks fit a similar mold, there’s enough variation to keep it interesting; especially when it comes to the melody.
