The Cro-Magnons, Waruboro, & go-karts
By Shay • Aug 16th, 2007 • Category: Japan, Videos, movies, music, rockYou know you’re in for a good time when The Cro-Magnons show up. Especially when they perform their latest hit, a movie theme, and they jam in the middle of a go-kart track.
“Girigirigagangan” (”ギリギリガガンガン”) is the latest song by veteran Japanese punk rockers The Cro-Magnons (ザ・クロマニヨンズ). Debuting on the Oricon charts at #6, “Girigirigagangan” is the theme song for the movie Waruboro (ワルボロ). The film which is set for release on September 8th, 2007 “is an adaptation of Gettsu Itaya’s semi-autobiographical novel.” Waruboro stars Ryo Kimura as well as Shirota Yuu and Masaki Kaji of D-Boys fame.
For me, the most exciting part about the movie is that The Cro-Magnons do the theme song. “Girigirigagangan” is pretty good. It has that inescapable trademark ‘Cro-magnons sound’ complete with that catchy, chanting chorus. Kohmoto Hiroto’s distinct voice leads the band as Mashima Masatoshi jams on guitar. Having played in both The Blue Hearts and The High-Lows together, it’s no suprised that Kohmoto and Mashima have developed this chemistry. It works.
If my favorite part about Waruboro is the theme, then my favorite part of the theme is the PV. Three words: go-kart track. The song’s PV has the band playing smack in the middle of a go-kart track. Clips from the movie are interspersed between the band-playing shots as go-karts careen by. On top of that, the guys look good in their colorful racing suits.
It’s interesting to notice the difference in colors between the Waruboro footage and when The Cro-Magnons are playing. The film footage has normal lighting etc. that you expect in movies but the parts with The Cro-Magnons are very colorful and high contrast. This makes for good destinction I suppose. It’s apparent that while the movie and actual song are related, the movie and PV footage are not as much so.
