Take one of Japan’s most iconic singer-songwriters combined with one of this season’s leading dramas and what do you get? A magical, chart-topping theme song.

Oda Kazumasa (小田和正) has been on the Japanese popular music scene for the past 4 decades. He made his debut in 1970 with Off Course, one of Japan’s most influential rock bands, and has gone on to a prolific solo career. Since 1985, Oda has released nine studio albums. The man’s unstoppable. And with one listen, his hauntingly beautiful voice, stellar songwriting ability, and musical talent make his success apparent.

Oda’s latest single, “Kokoro” (こころ) recently stormed atop the daily Oricon charts. “Kokoro” is the theme song to the popular TV drama, First Kiss (ファースト・キス) starring Inoue Mao and Ito Hideaki among others.

In “Kokoro”, Kazumasa Oda’s vocal ability shines through. His voice often has the ability to greatly affect listeners’ emotions. In a sorrowful ballad like “Kotobo ni dekinai” (言葉にできない), his sad resentment pours out. I almost want to cry. But “Kokoro” is very different. While it ponders, it offers hope and happiness throughout. “Kokoro” gives me the uncontrollable urge to smile.

The PV for “Kokoro” is simply wonderful. The video is a story of a wedding that focuses on the relationship between father and daughter. Told mostly through the father’s feelings and memories, sadness, happiness, and hope are all touched upon.

Alone and even accompanying the intro credits of First Kiss, “Kokoro” is beautiful. But combined with its PV, “Kokoro” is gorgeous. Oda Kazumasa has done it again and it’s no wonder why.
