Epik High’s Remapping the Human Soul

The Korean hip-hop trio Epik High is back and more ‘intense’ than ever. On January 23rd, 2007 they released their 4th album, Remapping the Human Soul.

Tablo, Mithra Jin, and DJ Tukutz’s latest effort results in 27-tracks on 2 CDs. Though Remapping the Human Soul‘s title is an obvious throwback to Epik High’s 2003 debut album Map of the Human Soul, its sound and atmosphere are distictly different. First impressions of Remapping suggest a much darker vibe amongst the intelligent rhymes.

The first single off of the album, “Fan” seems to best embody this sentiment. While the song itself hints at the subject of an obsessive love song, the single’s music video illustrates a much more dark and complex theme.

Simply put, the music video for “Fan” is strange. It appears to be about a stalker-type girl who has imprisoned a guy as sort of a ‘love slave’. We quickly find out how crazy she is and how hopeless he is through his/her respective actions. The video is certainly outrageous yet fascinating. The visuals are really stunning: the sets, the lighting, the acting is all convincing despite the storyline. If this were a 2-hour long movie I couldn’t stand it (I’d probably be disturbed), but since it’s only about 4-minutes and the actual song, “Fan” is really good, I can be entertained.

Epik High’s latest effort is unique when compared to much of the trio’s previous material but it is still equally entertaining and makes for an enjoyable listen. It’s still a bit difficult for me to hear to this new stuff and think, “These are the same guys that made the song ‘High Skool’?”…that song was so fun, what a difference. Ultimately, it’s refreshing to see accomplished artists branch out, explore, and take things in a different direction, so no qualms here. Have a watch…

Cool cool. Epik High reminds me of my trip to Korea. I still remember asking my friends what’s cool Korean music and they introduced me to Epik High. So I end up buying their ‘swan songs’ album.
