Week 3: “Koi no Mega Lover” – MAXIMUM THE HORMONE

Considering that I somehow forgot the “PV of the Week” last week, I’ll make this week (3.5?) extra special. This week’s PV is “Koi no Mega Lover” by Japanese hard rock act, MAXIMUM THE HORMONE. I first heard this song a couple weeks back and watched the PV a few days ago…WOW! I usually never like scream-rock but…WOW! MtH offers so much more.

If you’ve heard only a few songs by MAXIMUM THE HORMONE you may automatically assume they’re something like a screamo band. Referring to the quartet as that doesn’t do them justice. The do a great job of combining poppy melodies and other great rock elements (solos, etc.) with powerful and loud vocals. The 4 members that comprise MAXIMUM THE HORMONE form one of the most interesting line-ups I’ve seen (It’s cool to see a female drummer: Nawa). Their brand of rock is dynamic in its composition all while often sounding pretty chaotic. Influences such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers and TeddybearsSTHLM shine through in some songs as well.

“Koi no Mega Lover” seems to embody much of what has given MAXIMUM THE HORMONE some recent popular success. The song starts off sounding like cheery pop-rock. Almost a minute in and then you’re hit with bellowing power chords succeeded by abrasive vocals. It’s a perfect combination. I especially love the transition from chorus to verse.

There’s more,

The PV for “Koi no Mega Lover” fits the the song very well. It begins with 3 choreographed dancers. If you didn’t already know who MAXIMUM THE HORMONE are you’d be in for a big suprise. The curtains behind the dancers open and the heavier part of the song begins. This dark setting is complete with odd male dancers in bodypaint. The geeky gangsta guy adds hilirity to the video…great character for the song.

It’s like there are two different bands playing. There is the band that I would go to see play, and then there is the EXSCREAM guys.

If the song was just a development of the first pop/rock part it would be awesome. Kinda Andrew WK-ish. The screamo stuff just doesn’t cut it with me. Can’t take it seriously, no matter what language it’s in ^-^

I’m into metal and absolutely love MtH’s screamo parts. But pop bits help give the screamo parts more effect cause it shows the contrast between pop and heavy metal up your ass! xD
