‘Rice Fields’ - Jay Chou

Taiwanese-born superstar singer/songwriter/actor Jay Chou may be excused as just another pop singer. But he is much more. His music and writing abilities make him one of the most enigmatic popular perfomers out there.

When I first knew about him, I dismissed him as a singer that I probably wouldn’t like since he was a huge star. Boy, was I wrong. Upon listening to some of his material, my opionion changed drastically. While still very ‘pop’, Jay’s music exceeds above that connotation.

As a whole, Jay’s music posseses many layers of sound and complexity. While as far as genre goes, he’d fit into R&B/hip-hop, those lines surely do not confine him. He blends sound effects, traditional Chinese instruments, orchestras, piano, and many back-up vocalists to combine a very eveloping experience. Some of his music videos may be questionable but his songs are not-so-much.

His latest release titled “November’s Chopin” is a good piece of work, but I seem to prefer his 2003 album “Ye Hui Mei”. Songs such as “Year 3 Class 2″, “East Wind Breaks”, “Double Sabre”, and “Rice Fields” stand out as hallmarks of “Ye Hui Mei”.

I’ve included the latter mentioned song, “Rice Fields” in this post. It’s a beautiful song that has a powerful chorus worthy of a tear when in that certain mood. Enjoy.

    Yes I’ve heard about this guy (and I think I’ve seen him in a film). He seems about as cool as a male pop artist can ever be.
