The Nintendo Wiiiiiiiii
By Shay • Apr 30th, 2006 • Category: Opinion, news, video gamesAs it’s been announced, the next gen gaming system from Nintendo has changed names. The name has been changed from the moderately cool “Revolution” to the laughable “Wii”. That’s right…they will be giving us the Nintendo Wii (pronounced ‘we’) come launch.
I can definetly say that I was shocked to hear of this. For starters, I figured that “Revolution” was cool enough. I figured it to be a good step taken in the naming of Nintendo systems. That comes considering the names of their past systems: NES, SNES, GameBoy, N64, Gamecube, DS. With the exception of a few, the names for Nintendo systems have been less than imaginative.
With the Revolution being named the Wii I guess they sort of wanted to give us a kick in the face of off-the-wall creativity. I like unique things but I’m afraid that in this instance, that effort is a bit lasckluster.
Oh well, besides for marketing purposes is a name really that important for fans? Actually, yes! When I talk about this thing to my friends, now I get to sound even goofier. Thanks Nintendo.

Personally, I prefer “Revolution”. However, I guess this happens everytime a company makes a weird name. I first thought the iPod sound kind of odd, but now, wow, iPod sounds cool!
Yeah, iPod was odd at first, but just that…odd. I’m afraid Wii isn’t odd, it’s stupid. It may ‘creative’ but that’s not neccesarily a good thing. At least it’s much easier to say that “Revolution”.
Nah WII is fine i guess.. besides, hasn’t Nintendo always been aiming for the younger market? The market that can’t even pronounce Wii in a full sentence.. or make a full sentence to begin with? :D
I personally like Wii. Yes, I’m one of the few who does, but I generally ride it off as being that way because I’m a girl–I’ve noticed it’s mostly the guys who have major issues with the name. I think it’s cute. And now I get to bug all my gamer friends by going “Wiiiiiiiii” at random moments just because I can. Awesomeness.
I totally agree, Sami. I personally love the name ‘Wii’. It’s creative and it isnt boring like XBOX or GAMECUBE.
