Shay’s favorite Japanese PVs (episode 4)

Part 3: “Kiss One More Time” - TOMMY FEBRUARY6
“Kiss One More Time” by the former Brilliant Green frontwoman’s odd persona, TOMMY FEBRUARY6 is one of my favorite promotional videos for two specific reasons. Firstly, I enjoy the song itself a bit too much. Secondly, the video is one of the goofiest ones I’ve seen (it’s right up there next to Hirai Ken’s “Pop Star” PV). Surely those points combined are enough to make me count this as a personal favorite.

TOMMY FEBRUARY6 is half of the modern efforts of Tommy, the former frontwoman of the popular band The Brilliant Green. Her other corresponding project alongside FEBRUARY6 is called TOMMY HEAVENLY6. After The Brilliant Green, a pop rock band, Tommy did FEBRUARY6. This sound stands out as electro-poppy and cutely innocent. But in fact, that a facade for the more mature themes expressed in the FEBRUARY6 project. TOMMY HEAVENLY6 is Tommy’s more normal persona.
I really enjoy the PV for “Kiss One More Time” because of the humor in it. Not only does Tommy make cat-eye glasses look good, but through her portrayal as a soccer referee, she really makes me want to play soccer. So long as she is reffing that is. The video starts off in a spaceship-type setting with female black band members wearing out-of-place 80s garb. Then all of them, including Tommy beam themselves down to a rooftop soccer field. The field is complete with a HUGE Adidas logo…good product placement eh? There are even robotic dogs and Tommy giving out yellow cards.

The highlight in humor comes when Tommy kicks a soccer ball. Being a cool girl, I would have expected her to kick the hell out of the ball. On the contrary she gives the ball the silliest girly kick that I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. Upon seeing this I laughed like crazy. Maybe it wasn’t actually that funny, but for some reason I couldn’t help myself.
As a stand alone song, “Kiss One More Time” is cool too. It’s electronically bubbly, fun, and cute as well as sultry at the same time. I’d describe TOMMY FEBRUARY6’s sound, not just in this song but overall, as JPop meets EuroPop. Her stuff is nothing but fun. Listening and/or watching “Kiss One More Time” by TOMMY FEBRUARY6 always makes me happy, thus making it a personal favorite PV.
In order to see the PV and be amused, …you kept on reading, You’re cool!

I think my comment got lost. :’(
I saved it though.
I will have to watch this tomorrow when it isn’t 3AM. I’ve been up all night watching Densha Otoka and eating birthday cake, despite it not being anyone’s birthday.
MAN I LOVE THE BRILLIANT GREEN! Looking forward to watching this one tomorrow.
Just finished watching. Jeez! What could she wear and not make look good.
I’m noticing she doesn’t seem to be very good at soccer though.
The downbeat euro-pop/industrial feel and oddity of a video certainly belie the lyrical depth. I’d lost track of her since I heard The Brilliant Green split, and it’s nice to know she’s still turning out quality music (even though this one is even from 2001. >.>)
HAHA, yeah all of what you said Randall, is true. I’ll just leave it at that. ^_^ Good stuff, good luck, bad soccer…but I’ve never seen such a good looking soccer referee :D
I didn’t so much like this one, but I loved how she had to sneak a sip from the flask.
The soccer pitch location was a real one, not one just done for the video….Around the time of the 2002 world cup, the roof of the Tokyu Department store next to Shibuya station had a mini soccer pitch on it, and you can see the Tokyu Excel Shibuya Hotel in the background.
This song is so cool!! I have listened to it quite a few times. I don’t know who it was with my name, email, and website that didn’t like it months ago!
