Last Week’s PV: “HeartBreaker” – TERIYAKI BOYZ, episode 1.

Part 2: “Pop Star” – HIRAI KEN

The “Pop Star” PV by Hirai Ken has about as much character as Mickey Mouse being poked with a personality stick. And that’s a lot. This video by Japanese male pop sensation Hirai Ken is very unique. It’s not just different because of the wackiness shown, but because of Hirai himself. Hirai Ken is not at all known for being a funny, comedic-type singer. He is actually famous for many serious love ballads and such.

“Pop Star” is complete with an overly catchy melody, dancing and dressed-up Hirai Kens, a kitschy set, and mascots, a raccoon and a bear from the looks of it. The 70s vibe of the video is emphasized by Hirai dressed up in three different ways. Those are normal Ken, Afro Ken, and slightly geeky Ken. The “Pop Star” PV wins because of the combination of site and sound. If I can’t stop watching the PV, then I can’t stop listening to the song. It’s total greatness!

Hirai Ken’s “Pop Star” is unique, funny, and fresh. Not only does it stick out for its stand alone uniquenss, it sticks out as a diversion away from the normal Hirai Ken. Those things known, make it one of my favorite PVs!
