Shay’s favorite Japanese PVs (episode 1)
By Shay • Apr 3rd, 2006 • Category: Japan, Videos, musicWith this entry begins an extra-special weekly feature. I give you “Shay’s favorite Japanese PVs”. In this series, I will post and write about some of my favorite (and usually wacky) Japanese promotional music videos. I’ll chronicle my adventures through videopolis, hopefully exposing you to some fun stuff . So sit back, relax, read, watch, and enjoy.
Part 1: “HeartBreaker” - TERIYAKI BOYZ
I have become a fan of the Japanese hip-hop group TERIYAKI BOYZ mostly due to the fact that they make me laugh. For me, the coolest thing about TB is the fact that M-Flo rapper Verbal is in the group (if you’ve read certain previous posts, I’m sure you know about my affinity for M-Flo). TERIYAKI BOYZ consists of four MCs and a DJ. The group is Verbal, Wise, Ryo-Z, Ilmari, and Nigo on turntables. TB is a sort of great side project since every member is from another group.

I mentioned that TERIYAKI BOYZ makes me laugh right? Indeed that’s true. The video for “HeartBreaker” is hilirious. Not only does it have the BOYZ in a spaceship abducting a cow that turns into a hot girl, they masquerade as The Beatles, and hang out around a camouflage-painted lowrider. How random? How fun! Also, the song itself uses samples from Daft Punk’s “Human After All”. The presence of Daft Punk in anything makes it pretty cool.

I highly enjoy this PV for its sense of humor, peculiarity, and the song itself. If you’re going to watch one pure hip-hop video with a wacky, Japanese twist, make it the PV for “HeartBreaker” by TERIYAKI BOYZ.

I’m not quite 100% sure, but it looked like they were also doing a parody of Daft Punk’s ‘Around the World’ when they were marching around the hot chick. They show the clip quickly, and then by the end.
Ya Toad, I agree. There is also a part when one of the members gets out of the lowrider and he pulls up his pant leg to reveal that he has the “DAFT PUNK” logo on his shoe. Since they used Daft Punk’s sample, it’s really cool that they acknowledge that in the video.
I think the fun quality of TB tends to be overlooked by -say- Western fans of Japanese music. However I’m a firm believer that the Teriyaki Boyz look like fun. The song by the way was produced by Daft Punk but it is a good song in its own right. I got the TB DVD a couple of days ago and it pretty much dispels the myth of TB as a serious hardcore Hip Hop group - they make you laugh painfully.
