March 24th marked the DVD release of the 2005 Japanese movie, Scrap Heaven. The film is a bit unique as far as story goes.

Scrap Heaven is directed by Sang-il Lee and stars Joe Odagiri, Akira Kase, and Chiaki Kuriyama. The film is about the three being taken hostage on a bus ride home. Their captor, a down and out salary man then later commits suicide.

The 3 from Scrap HeavenThat life-changing event ends up having a profound effect on each. The three vow to set out on a mission to “retaliate against society”. Their method is writing on bathroom walls and vowing to carry-out whatever that the message says.

Obviously Scrap Heaven seems odd, just from that summary. It doesn’t look like a happy film. But most movies that look at this certain facet of society never are. Scrap Heaven does look interesting though. Whether it is good or bad, I’d like to give it a watch.

Here’s the super-official trailer.
Get your hands on the DVD.

Heya! Thanks for the comment and link to my blog! I linked ya’ right back ;)

You know, I had heard about Scrap Heaven, but I wasn’t sure until I read your review whether or not to go rent it. But it definitely sounds a bit quirky (is that the right word to use for kidnapping/suicide movies?) so I’ll probably check it out next time I’m at Tsutaya.

Also, the previous post about the sumo wrestlers and the burgler was hilarious!
