No Spitting, sort of

Citizens in Beijing are learning proper manners. This effort to shape up Chinese citizens’ manners comes in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games that will be held there.

Good manners, please

Particularly, people are learning the proper way to spit and sit. Apparently, visitors are often shocked to see people spit anywhere. This new education campaign by the Chinese officials will hopefully shape up behavior and therefore Beijing will seem more friendly to visitors.

Considering the amount of tourists the Olympics will bring in, this makes sense, I guess. I just can’t imagine spitting and other bad manners being a huge problem. But then again, I have never been to Beijing.

  1. I have lived in Japan for quite some time, and visited China for just one week last year, to Beijing! One of the FIRST things I noticed, was that people spit EVERYWHERE. And it’s not just, spitting like you’ve got a hair on your lip or something… But like totally winding up and hacking a winner.

In Japan you see that from ojisan sometimes… But in China, even beautiful girls will hack a big one right in public. It’s so weird.

  2. My bf said that when he visited China with his parents when he was 5 years old, he also noticed that people just spit everywhere. That’s so nasty! I don’t get how that is acceptable in their culture.

  3. I’ve been there last summer, saw it too.It shocked the heck out of me :D

    Nice site btw !

  4. Yeah David, That would shock me too!

    Thanks for the compliment too!

  5. Yeah well, luckily its going to be stopped. I’m from Taiwan (It’s right next to China on the World Map) and I think that spitting is just filthy. I live in New Zealand, and everywhere you go, you would see a Maori spit on the ground. That’s not all, some Pakeha (White people) also try to imitate them to try to be cool! It’s just so disgusting and stupid!

  6. I find it disgusting that the government forces the citizens to change their culture because of foreigners.
