The internet has always (and will always) be a source of groundbreaking technology, especially when it comes to entertainment. The latest groundbreaking site to strike my fancy is AnyFilms.

AnyFilms is essentially an interactive movie site by Samsung. Interactive movies? Oh yes! One of the features of AnyFilms allows you to choose how a movie’s story is told. You simply drag icons onto a grid and hit view. This seemingly complex videographic matrix picks a combination of small clips from a larger story to play. There are “10 endings and 11,000 ways for the story to play out”.

You then watch the clips which were prompted to play by your interactive decision making. At first the overall story doesn’t make much sense. That is the point though. Just go back, reset the grid, and place different icons. Once you hit view again, a new set of clips will play. Eventually you can uncover what is really happening in the movie. I don’t quite understand how the whole interactive grid system works, but I’d like to know.

Ask experts what the future of movies will be like, and I bet many would probably allude to interactivity in cinema. This AnyFilms project by Samsung is the first substantial step in that direction as far as I’ve seen. I’d love to see more of this sort of thing online in the future, it’s fun!
