Yes, today is January, 29th 2006 and it’s officially the “Year of the Dog” according to the Chinese calender.
This is the New Years celebration comes after the 12-year ban on fireworks in Beijing was lifted. In the spirit of the new year, here’s a video of Chinese people in the streets celebrating with fireworks:

I went to my university’s CNY celebration. Quite a good time. The first song was rather spooky-nationalist, but most of the acts were really fun, and the last was even done by kids from the local Taiwanese Chinese school.
