It’s been announced that super-popular manga, Death Note will be made in to a live-action movie. Actually there are plans for a sequel even before the first feature comes out. The first installment will be released in June, the sequel in October, hopefully.

I was tipped off about this by Mari at Watashi to Tokyo. The current casting list is as follows:
Right Yagami (‘Light’ in the English version): Tatsuya Fujiwara. That’s right, “Nanahara” in Battle Royale.
L/Ryuzaki: Matuyama Kenichiro
Ryuku (Ryuk): Still unkown. I wish I knew!

That’s all I know so far, thanks to Watashi to Tokyo. I hope more news will surface. Regardless of who is in the live-action version of Death Note, the announcement of the movie itself is very exciting.
Tell me more, please!

Nice article. I like the way you did the comparisons. Oh, and apparently Ryukku and Remu are going to be computer-generated…I really can’t wait for this movie…!
By Shay on February 8, 2006 at 12:53 pm
Thanks Lia, and that’d make sense if they’re CG. I mean the producers might have a hard time finding their look-a-likes. LOL
By Kat on February 13, 2006 at 1:41 am
Actually for Remu I was thinkin and i also read it on a site that michael Jackson would do a pretty good job, they look really alike. Go check it out ur self.
By Kat on February 13, 2006 at 1:43 am
by the way, havent u guys asked ur selfs who is gonna be Misa? Thats wat I would really wanna know
By Claire on March 18, 2006 at 10:47 am
I’m just wondering who the voice of Ryuk will be? And of Remu as well becausxe the producers can’t just have them not talking the whole way through right?
By Jest on March 23, 2006 at 6:17 am
Wow, I know I’m really a geek now. I recognized both those actors from other Japanese Movies/Dramas. XD
By Jax on April 10, 2006 at 2:26 pm
I heard a rumor that Red Hot Chili Peppers was doing the music for this movie– any idea how true that is? Or who else may be doing it? :) Great comparisons, by the way. I found that handy.
By Shay on April 10, 2006 at 11:20 pm
Jax, I’ve heard something like that but I’m still not quite sure. That would be odd/wierd/interesting/possibly cool though.
Thanks too!

Ahh any of you watch “Nobuta wo Produce”? The “Mariko” in “Nobuta” is Amane Misa for Death Note – gorgeous!! 8D
I only remember her first name which is Eriko. You may try youtube.com n search for death note trailer, in which they have all the cast names due for the movie in the description list. From there you may find out the character’s names n hence try to look for their pictures online. Honestly, the only pictures that was disclosed so far was Raito, L, Misa, the Original Character and Souichirou ~_~
Seems like the rest of the cast’s image were not circulated around the internet. If anyone managed to find any pictures related to the movie it would be super cool!

“I heard a rumor that Red Hot Chili Peppers was doing the music for this movie– any idea how true that is?”
I just heard on the radio, that it’s been confirmed that Red Hot Chili Peppers are going to be doing the music. I’ve never read the manga, but this sounds like awesome news ^-^
By Steph on May 2, 2006 at 10:36 pm
the shinigami are going to be CGI so there won’t be any offical actors, but maybe voice actors
By Acko on May 17, 2006 at 9:08 pm
OK can someone tell me when it is coming out?! I’m hearing about it…but I can’t find out WHEN it is coming out…pls. e-mail the answer: Acko92@aim.com

By Allison on June 22, 2006 at 12:08 pm
I was just watching a Japanese trailer for the movie: http://www.theotaku.com/news/view/new_death_note_movie_trailer/1453/
On the trailer you can see the casting of other characters like Raye and Naomi.
Matuyama Kenichiro as L looks really good, which makes me happy because he’s my favorite. ^ ^
The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ song Dani California is the theme of the movie.
Hopefully they do a good job transfering the manga to the movie. And I really hope they subtitle it and release it in the US.

By Kubus on January 8, 2007 at 4:20 am
I just watched a Japanese trailer for the movie and it says the DVD for the first movie comes out in february 2007 in Japan and Hong Kong. It will have English subs.
Now to find a place where I can order it >.>.
By Lisa on January 11, 2007 at 6:55 am
Ok…Considering the producing has been helped by Warner brothers, and there’s an Americain band helping out with the music as well…I don’t get why it wouldn’t be eventually aired in America? Sure there’s not many mainstream completely japanese productions working around…Considering there is no non-Japanese people in the movie through most of it…And there’s a 10% chance it is going to get really popular in america (Even if there’s a lot of Death note fans in international countries.) There’s not enought to win major oscars in America. Demo (But) because of us death note fans, I believe there is a chance that it’s going to be released directly onto home video (Like FFVII without any theater screening.) Chances, 87%… Although I would hate to hear the dubbing, I want it to be released in international countries so that I can possess the movie, make fun of the dubbing then watch it with subtitles and original voices…GO L!!! They did a good job (From what I`ve seen in the trailers.)
By Ee Lin on January 15, 2007 at 8:58 am
i’m so happy ;) the 2nd part of death note movie showing in mid of January here!! can’t waitttttt…

LOL!
By Sumisu on January 21, 2007 at 5:45 am
So, I take it that none of you have seen, nor heard about the movie in awhile yes? I could be wrong and if I am, please correct me. The RHCP did the score for the movie, Ryuk and the whole shinigami crew is CG rendered, and some puppets used too, but not many. Though the story isn’t exactly like the manga or the anime, its still told in a cool, -ahem- COOL manor. You’ll enjoy the movie, trust me. How do I know? Because I’m…Kira… :) No seriously, i’ve seen the movie already. Really REALLY good.
By Shay on January 21, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Hi Sumisu, that’s cool that you saw it ^^. Yeah, RHCP are in it.
For everyone, there’s a soundtrack-type album that came out on December 20th: The Songs For Death Note The Movie ~The Last Name Tribute~ it features artists such as,
KYONO(THE MAD CAPSULE MARKETS)×DJ STARSCREAM(Sid #0 of Slipknot), Rize, Orange Range, UVERworld, abingdon boys school, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR, Doping Panda, ULTRA BRAiN, Katou Miliyah, Hoi Festa, Takahashi Hitomi, Tama, Galneryus, and Daita

you guys… if you want to see an english subbed movie of deathnote.. go to veohtv.com and check up deathnote movie.. you’ll find it eventually.
Oh and btw. There is news of an upcoming deathnote movie in english coming to select theaters in may 20-21 for two days only in the usa. dont ask which select theaters.. cause i don’t know.
By kashixo on April 18, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Go to Mysoju.com for the first and second movies! The third movie isn’t online yet, to my knowledge.
The first one will be released in the US soon, but I don’t think they’re remaking it or anything. Just with subs I think, hopefully not dubs.
By Mei on May 13, 2008 at 3:35 pm
So if you guys wanna know in which theaters they are gonna show!
Go to: http://www.fathomevents.com/
