The Electro Hip Hop
By Shay • Dec 6th, 2005 • Category: Japan, Opinion, musicCall me a sucker for it, because I am. I’m a sucker for a genre of music that cannot fail me. Behold, electro-hip-hop-pop (electro hip hop/electropop). This is an unofficial term by the way. I don’t really know what to call it.

Specifically I am talking about the Japanese end of things. More precisely I am referring to the popular duo, M-Flo. Currently a duo (ever since Lisa left in spring 2003), they are now most widely known for their collaborations with an eclectic array of popluar artists (ala M-Flo loves “insert artist”). M-flo seems simple; It’s Taku Takahashi on turntables and rapper Verbal. Taku is not just a mere DJ but a composer as well. Verbal is actually of Korean descent. His rap style is rather playful, uplifting, and frequently in English.
What sets these two apart is their music itself. The beats that Taku spins are very crisp while the grooves are often mellow but melodic. Throw in Verbal’s upbeat rhymes and the frequent female guest vocals and we have a winner. To me, M-Flo is very unique, not just by their genre, but by their structure and sound. Keep on spinning, please!
Their current album is “Beat Space Nine” and latest single is “Loop in My Heart”, check ‘em out.
