Geisha not so memorable

Released this past weekend, the pan-pacific collaborative “Memoirs of a Geisha” failed to rake in the earnings at the Japanese box office. According to Japanese box office tracking firm Kogyo Tsushinsha, the film opened 4th overall and grossed $1.5. Two American movies, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” beat out “Memoirs of a Geisha.” The numbers might be skewed because everyone likes Harry Potter and maybe the Japanese have an insatiable appetite for Brad Pitt.

The film has drawn controversy from the portrayals in the novel to the starring talents. Whether it’s those controversies or just the Japanese movie audience’s disinterest for the subject matter the fact of its performance is still certain. We’ll see how it does with its full American release come December, 23.

  1. Well, despite the fact it didn’t do well in Japan….

Zhang Ziyi + geisha role…. Yes, please.

  2. I’m not surprised at all that it did poor over there. If a Japanese group of people made a movie about the US, the majority of the Americans wouldn’t go se it. We’d wait until it is available on netflix.

  3. I agree with Mikey there =]
