Entry of a Geisha

I cannot help but applaud Dreamworks and Columbia Pictures on this endeavor. It is great to see an American film with a non-American cast. I can only imagine the dimensions of complexity that this adds to production. Arthur Golden’s novel being brought to the international silver screen has me all excited.
The movie brings together an all-star Asian cast that includes both Chinese and Japanese. Being the person that I am, I found it perplexing to see Chinese actors in a movie about Japan, in Japan. But alas, it does make sense to me. It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to cast one of the east’s biggest name in Hollywood for the lead role, Zhang Ziyi. She stars opposite of Japanese actor Ken Watanabe, polpularized in America by his performance in The Last Samurai. Other notable names are Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li, both of whom are Chinese. Of course there is successful director Rob Marshall and music scored by John Williams. Apparently, Williams passed up scoring the lastest Harry Potter flick for this.

I don’t know the studio’s reason for casting Chinese talents into this movie. I just hope it’s not because they assume that they American public won’t know/care. I can understand how Zhang Ziyi fits this role by looking at many of her past performances and her status in Hollywood. Another head turner is the language. It’s an American movie so it’s in English. I understand that reason and it makes sense. But, I might find it wierd to see a movie set in Japan with a (partly) Japanese cast speaking English with an accent. One last thing is the fact that the novel was written by an American. For better or for worse, the whole history of this film’s coming-to-be is multi-national. It’s all good though. I will definetly see it when it has has its simultaneous international release. Look for a review when I see it.
