Xinhua reports that “The Promise” (known in it’s American release as “Master of the Crimson Armor,” mentioned recently), shattered Chinese box office records this past weekend. The epic tale directed by Chen Kaige that stars Nic Tse, Cecilia Cheung, and Hiroyuki Sanada grossed about $9 million. The previous record holder was Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle” in 2004.

The success of “The Promise” is only fitting for its budget. It is the most expensive film in China to date.
